FAQ's

How does it work?

Light is selectively absorbed by melenin (the pigment in the hair follicle). The light energy heats up the hair permantly destroying any hair follicles in the growth stage, without damaging the surrounding cells.

How many treatments will I need?

Hair grows in cycles, anagen (growth stage), catagen (resting stage) and telagen (shedding stage). We can only destroy follicles in the anagen stage and so several treatments are needed to destroy all follicles in any particular area. Typically around 6 treatments are needed for a good result.

Where can be treated?

Pretty much any area of the body can be treated apart from the inside of your ears, nostrils and the area within the orbit of the eye.

Who cannot be treated?

If you are under 18 years old, taking roaccutane (isotretinoine), pregnant, breastfeeding, on any medications that cause light sensitivity or undergoing cancer treatment then we cannot treat you.

Can you treat all skin colours and hair types?

For the treatment to work then the hair follicle must be darker than the skin. Therefore we cannot treat grey, white and very blonde hair, or anyone whose hairs are lighter than their skintone.

How long does it take?

Treatments typically take between 10 and 60 minutes depending on the size of the area to be treated.

Does it hurt?

Treatment sensation varies but it is often described as a flick of an elastic band. No anaesthetic is required and most clients describe the discomfort as moderate and tolerable.

What are the side effects?

Following treatment the area may be red and the hair follicles may be swollen, but this usually subsides within a few hours. Adverse reactions are very rare but may include blistering or a tempory lightening or darkening of the skin.

Laser vs IPL

We often refer to permanent hair reduction as laser hair removal when actually most clinics prefer to use IPL rather than laser. Both Laser and IPL destroy the hair follicle by a process called selective photothermolysis. whether laser or IPL the light that is delivered to the target (hair) will deliver sufficient energy to destroy the hair follicle.

Which is better, laser or IPL?

There is no true answer to this debate as both methods work well. The more important factor is the quality of the machine being used. We use a Lynton Luminette. Lynton are the most trusted laser and IPl specialists in the UK. They have won many awards and provide excellent machines and training.
